Rolling year or calendar year?
Both are on this site and they answer different questions. The rolling year above is the freshest possible 12-month total and is what the Home Office headlines each quarter, but it always contains a provisional part-year. Returns and deportation works in calendar years, which is the right basis for comparing 2025 against 2015, and the annual reviews follow the same basis. Where a figure has been restated between releases, the revisions ledger records what it used to be.
Data Limitations & Caveats
- Provisional. The most recent quarters are provisional and are revised in later releases, so the rolling-year total should be expected to move.
- Returns basis. "Returns" means enforced plus voluntary, the Home Office's own headline definition. Port refusals are reported alongside, never inside, that total.
- Small differences from the published table. These totals are summed from the detailed datasets, which round suppressed low counts independently of the summary tables; a handful of people either way is normal. See methodology.
- Not a calendar year. Do not compare a rolling-year figure with a calendar-year figure and describe the difference as a change over time.
